A few of my favorite things…

There are so many products I’m excited about that I thought I’d share some of my favorite things with you, maybe I’ll even make it Favorite Things Friday! Let’s get started!

Stila Stay All Day Lipstick in a beautiful bright pink shade called Bella found here. This lip stain has avocado oil in it so it goes on like butter, moisturizer your lips, and literally stays on all day!

Shop bando “I Am Very Busy” Agenda found here (it’s actually currently sold out because it’s just that good, but you can sign up on the waiting list) This calendar makes planning fun, it’s got all kinds of fun stickers, reminds you when it’s national hot dog day, and on random days throughout the year tells you things like, go get froyo with all the toppings, jam out to Jenny Lewis, send your bestie a card, watch anything with Ryan Gosling in it, plant a tree, take a chill pill and even little affirmations like “your hair is really shiny” and “your face is like sunshine”. I mean how can that not brighten your day?!

Slink Magazine Tortoiseshell Sunglasses from Cool Gal Blue found here (you’ll also find tons of cute plus size fashions and you may notice something very unique about their site, no photoshop whatsoever, the models are beautiful just the way they are!)

Ladybug Wallet found at Target here in one of my favorite color with one of my favorite bugs, it’s even big enough to hold my phone and has a convenient wristlet so you just grab it to run into the store without bringing your whole purse!

Realtree for Her eau de parfum found here Real Tree for Her opens up with the sweet taste of pomegranate, a hint of persimmon and an exotic scent of orchids. It blends with lotus blossom and champaca flower and it’s followed by the rich scent of amber, the transient scent of violets and the depth of mahogany wood. I originally got it as a sample from ipsy and loved it, which is saying a lot since I’m very picky wheb it comes to scents…well really when it comes to everything if I’m being honest…

Figs & Rouge Shea Butter Hand Cream found here. Another ipsy sample, this Shea & Cocoa Butter Hand Cream softens, nourishes & thoroughly pampers hands throughout the day with a light & lovely scent!

And last but not least, I cannot get enough of these cheap statement necklaces I’m finding for super cheap on eBay! Because they come from China, they definitely take a while to ship, but at an average of $3 a pop, it’s worth the wait! Here’s one of my favorite sellers on eBay.

First World Problems…

Today I experienced a few “problems” that I realized, upon further examination, most people would laughingly refer to as “first world problems”. Urban dictionary defines the term as “Problems from living in a wealthy, industrialized nation that third worlders would probably roll their eyes at.”

First, I really wanted to have my morning cup of tea out of this beautiful teacup I got at Goodwill (did I mention they just built a brand new store 10 minutes from my house?! It’s amazing) for a DOLLAR! But apparently, according to my mothers, it’s really old and painted with gold paint full of lead that could like, kill me or something?!

Isn’t it pretty? But I can’t drink out of it?! Then when doing research about it (upon which I also found a yahoo answer saying, “even if it was lead that isnt enough to hurt you, unless you were an infant and it alll chipped off and you swallowed it, then maybe youd get sick, otherwise lead in small amounts is good, and if there old there most likely good quality, they should be fine” now I’m not saying that my moms are wrong, I’m just saying I like that lady from Virginia’s answer much better) I found it listed on etsy for $30. So now I am confronted with two “problems”, if I keep it I can’t drink from it and if I sell it I could make a $29 profit but then I wouldn’t have this beautifully unique teacup in my collection!

Next, I tried out a new company called Warby Parker. You go to their site, pick out five pairs of frames which they then send you for FREE to try on and then you send them back and if you choose order a pair with your prescription.

It’s pretty cool and I like them all (stay tuned for a future post where you can help me choose the best pair) but now I’m faced with a dilemma, I like them all! How do I choose?!

And lastly, I just feel like ipsy doesn’t get me and it’s so frustrating! Let me explain. I’ve blogged about ipsy before (click to read) but I’ll refresh your memory; Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag. The products are chosen specifically for you based on a personalized beauty quiz you take when you sign up. I think it’s one of the best value beauty subscriptions and a great way to try out new products and build out your makeup collection for less than the cost of one tube of lip gloss!

But here’s the thing, despite me taking the quiz, sometimes I just feel like they don’t get me at all! Did my personal beauty quiz really make you think I wanted metallic blue liquid liner and lip butter that was the creepiest flesh shade I would only wear if I were playing a corpse in a movie?! Really ipsy?! This has happened several times over the course of my subscription and it gives me pause as to whether I should continue the service.

I realized that all three of these “problems”; the tea cup, the glasses, and the beauty products, really aren’t problems at all. Weird Al even wrote a song about “First World Problems” on his new album, it’s one of the only songs to not directly parody a current popular song. Yankovic instead opts to imitate the Pixies’ style to riff about the hardest parts of life; showers getting cold after a mere hour, friends calling instead of texting, and the perils of low thread counts on the sheets. See the Video here.

My point in all this? Although this post was meant to be a comical one (obviously I have REAL problems like we all do) just because other people have bigger problems you shouldn’t minimize your own. (I’m not referring to the aforementioned ones though) Like when someone says, “well it could be worse, you could have cancer.” That’s true but it doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to be sad for what I am dealing with. Everybody has their stuff. But for the most part, we’re pretty spoiled and shouldn’t be complaining about anything. I am grateful for the lack of big problems in my life, and happy to have little “first world” ones. Are you?

It’s ipsy time!

I received some very happy mail today, my ipsy glam bag. Ipsy is a beauty sampling service which, for only $10 a month, allows you to try a variety of different beauty products tailored to your likes (based on a detailed survey you take when you sign up with questions about hair & skin type, affinity for nail art, etc etc) Each bag is usually worth between $50-$100 and the sizes are very generous for the price. This is my third month using the service and so far I have been very pleased. I think we can all say we’ve spent $10 on ONE product only to get it home, hate it, and never use it again. So for me it’s totally worth it to try out several different products before committing to full size/price, have a great variety of options, and a cute bag to boot! There’s also a forum on their website where users give helpful reviews and even trade items since like I mentioned, due to each persons survey, products vary. I haven’t tried the trading thing yet, but maybe in the future. My products came in a lovely recycled fabric bag along with the message, “It’s a month of crisp air, vibrant flowers, and fresh Glam Bag products! Getting your beauty to bloom all month long will be as easy as lying in the warm grass and basking in the sunshine.” Here’s a list of my items as well as my initial review since I haven’t tried them all yet.
1. Lulu Blossom Dreamsicle Body Balm
This adorable 2 oz. tin is a great size for your purse or cosmetic bag and since a little goes a long way with this moisturizing product, it will last a long time. Simply made of Shea butter, wax, and grape seed oil, it’s creamy and nourishing without feeling greasy and has a light but pleasant tropical scent. I plan on keeping it in my nail kit to put on my cuticles and heels (which could use all the help they can get!) The label on the back also suggests using it as a pomade or quick fix for flyaways so that’s good to know too!
2. Pacifica eyeshadow duo in purple and cream shimmer
I love Bare Minerals and MAC so I admit to being an eyeshadow snob but I don’t think it’s just me, I was not impressed with this. The label boasts a 100% vegan & cruelty free formula which is great and all but it also happens to be 100% BLA. There’s very little pigmentation and it barely shows up on the skin. Oh well, you win some you lose some. This one goes to the girl’s play makeup box!
3. eva*nyc rock-a-wave curl cream leave in cream
As any curly girl knows, we’re ALWAYS on the hunt for the perfect styling product. This one is full of Argan oil and Keravis Protein with a slight coconut scent so it should be good for my hair but the true test will be if it can tame my curls! I’ll keep you posted.
4. derma e microdermabrasion scrub
Another 100% vegan & cruelty free product, I’m excited to use this scrub. Screaming bright citrus notes as soon as you open the lid it’s sure to wake up and brighten my skin with its gentle exfoliation. My skin is pretty good but I can always use a good exfoliator, especially on my nose which seems to be the most blackhead-prone area.
5. Hang Ten water resistant natural sunscreen SPF 50
Criticize me all you want but 50 is a little high on the sunscreen spectrum for my taste. I know I know, but I’m sorry, I like a little color! Numbers aside, this natural formula goes on very nicely with a thin non-gloopy texture. It has the classic sunscreen smell and upon smelling it I was instantly reminded of the way babies smell at the beach. You know what I’m talking about? Babies already smell heavenly but with the addition of sunscreen on their chubby little arms and legs and the salt air, there’s truly nothing better. This one is going right to my beach/pool bag it’s the perfect size for a last minute trip when I may forget the giant bottle.
Well there you have it ladies and gentlemen (though I’m guessing more ladies…) I hope this review was helpful and I definitely recommend giving ipsy a try!
